What is abortion?
Abortion refers to an act performed to terminate a pregnancy by the expulsion or removal of foetus or embryo. An abortion that happens without intervention is a miscarriage or sponteneous abortion. Types of abortion
Usually, abortion is of two types:
- Induced abortion – It is an abortion that you decide to happen with intervention . as per a study, around 205 million pregnancies happen in a year. Over 1/3rd of the total pregnancies end unintendedly and and 1/5th of them are induced abortion. As per the age of the foetus/embryo, doctors decide the methods to abort a pregnancy. Reasons behind induced abortion coule be therapeutic, career growth, family responsibility, or financial stability.
- Spontaneous abortion – It is usually a miscarriage that happens unintentionally before the 20-24th week of a pregnancy. Around 80% of spontaneous abortion or miscarriages happen in the first trimester. Miscarriages happen due to advance maternal age, maternal health, embryo/foetus health, diabetes, infection, and uterine abnormalities. A pregnancy ends before the 37th week and results in a live birth is a preterm birth or premature birth. And a foetus dies during delivery or after viability is stillborn. Experts do not refer preterm births and stillborn as miscarriages
Abortion methods

During the interaction, you need to answer a few questions of your doctor. If required, the doctor conducts a physical examination and recommends a few tests/screenings. Based on all that, the doctor decides the right method to help you terminate your pregnancy. For your self-education, here are what doctors usually suggest:
- Medical abortion – It is a safe process in which gynaecologists/obstetricians recommend medicines like mifespristone and misoprostal in the eraly first trimester. It is legal up to 7-9 weeks of pregnancies. Timing differs from one country to another.
- Surgical abortion – Docttors opt a vacuum aspiration or suction aspiration for a pregnancy of up to 15 weeks. In the process, the experts remove the foetus or embryo from the uterus with the use of a suction. When a pregnancy is beyond 12 to 16 week, experts opt for dilation and evacuation (D&E). As per maternal and foetal health, experts can opt for other surgical methods to terminate a pregnancy.
- Labour induction abortion – Such a method is highly in practice at places where no medical facilities are available. It is a very uncommon method done from the 13th week to the 3rd trimester of a pregnancy. In this process, practitioners induce labour and do foetal demise if required. There is enough data about this method to abort a pregnancy.
